Think about your marketing like a magazine.

This is my favorite way to think about curating digital content.

Getting started seems to be the biggest issue for most of my clients. So, here’s a great way to think about organizing and sharing your content.

Let’s take my client Stacy for example. She makes cookies, really good ones. Her thing is shortbread and crusts. And flowers. She combines them for a really cool business. But she asked me the other day about her instagram. She’s not used to being on instagram and felt a lot of pressure to share content now that she’s a business owner.

First, everyone’s business is different. There is no one way to do things. But she wants to be active on her business instagram now that she’s been making local friends. It’s fun.

So, here was my advice for her– think of it like a magazine. In this case, I used my first favorite magazine (besides Seventeen and Highlights) Martha Stewart Living. I mean I need every issue. Still.

They are seasonal. They are beautiful. There’s a theme but there is also consistency. It’s so helpful and inspiring and sometimes even has me thinking I COULD BE MARTHA. It’s laughable but it gets me. And I actually love it.

So, here’s what I told her–

  • Plan ahead. What do you want to release in your Spring Issue? Give yourself time for these things–

    • Product lineup. What are you going to be making? Any holidays coming up?

    • Establish a theme– think about it, dream about it, maybe even get your a$$ onto Pinterest.

    • Think about how many ‘articles’ or pieces of content you’d like to share

    • Ask yourself why this would be interesting / helpful to your customers AND aligned with your brand (aka, aligned with the things you care about and that also make your business more understandable to your customers)

    • HAVE FUNNNNNNNNNNNN. What sounds fun?? SERIOUSLY.

  • Set some dates.

    • For releasing

    • For writing

    • For collaborating

    • For getting excited

    • For editing

    • For learning some tech stuff (reels, amirite)

  • Form some kinda spreadsheet I guess? However you organize yourself, do that. Do your best to create daily. Do your best to work toward your release date.

  • Then, schedule it out! You can automate lots of stuff. Or at least make it so that most of the work is done and all you’re doing is posting and interacting.

FUNNNNNNN!
